SS-31 (also known as elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide engineered to target the inner mitochondrial membrane. It binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane and essential to the structural integrity of the electron transport chain.
By stabilising the respiratory complexes, SS-31 is studied for its capacity to restore efficient electron flow, reduce electron leakage at Complexes I and III, and lower the generation of reactive oxygen species. The compound accumulates selectively within mitochondria, with concentrations estimated at 1,000 to 5,000 times cytoplasmic levels.
Its mitochondria-targeted mechanism positions it as a research tool in investigations of mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and cellular bioenergetics across a range of preclinical models.
