DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide) is a nonapeptide first isolated in 1977 from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits in which sleep had been electrically induced. It was named for its apparent association with delta wave activity characteristic of slow-wave sleep.
Research interest in DSIP centres on its modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis: studies have reported that DSIP reduces the release of corticotropin (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary, which in turn decreases cortisol secretion from the adrenal cortex.
The peptide has been examined in research on sleep architecture, stress regulation, and circadian rhythm, and remains an incompletely characterised molecule with an active investigative literature.
